Franz Burkhardt

A journey into Lilliput

Burkhardt works as a sculptor and draftsman, attempting to merge both artistic areas in his works. The intricately constructed components of facades and spaces also serve as a presentation area for his drawings, which are humorous and satirical, stemming from a close observation of everyday surroundings.

Burkhardt’s meticulously made drawings are devoted to the still life, the nude, domestic scenes, animals and landscapes. He finds inspiration in found photographic source material and text fragments. When it comes to his sculptural work, Franz Burkhardt’s interest is ignited by urban motifs: aged street furniture, the patina of crumbling walls, advertising and graffiti. Employing a variety of materials, he creates deceptively realistic facades, walkable streetscapes and interiors. In each case, the result is an astonishingly credible atmosphere a stage in itself for a programmatic ‘perhapsness’ that lies behind each of Franz Burkhardt’s works.
